steven's chapel

During my recent visit to Seattle, I had to again check out architect Steven Holl's beautiful Chapel of Saint Ignatius along a major pedestrian way through the Seattle University Campus.

I first enjoyed it, when it was brand new. 16 years since, it has aged gracefully. I observed a spot or two where some moss has been allowed to grow, but up close and at a distance, the craftsmanship still excels. The doors were locked this time, so an interior visit was not possible. Unfortunately, the best part of this building is the interior experience.  Those hand troweled plaster walls (washed with the ever changing natural light) offer simple beauty within the harmony of natural and man made  Even so, my limited visit stirred that anticipated aesthetic pleasure.
