Cal's World Architecture

I was fortunate to be able to enjoy professor Calvin Straub FAIA while an undergraduate architecture student at Arizona State University.  Respected architect and teacher, this coffee cup was handed out during his life celebration years ago. The bow tie, squinty eyes, mustache, bald head, and architecture, are collectively Cal (captured by his friend and colleague Bruce Kimball).

As I consider teaching college students (beyond showing up as an invited design critic during end of semester design studio reviews), Cal comes to mind. WORLD CLASS EDUCATOR.

He taught a class focused on introducing non-architecture majors to "architecture" and it's historical influence across the planet. It was education about humanity. His presentations of our built environment within a global perspective were inspiring and fun.   He'd advise us to "travel...and along the way...purchase foods at the local market and make a picnic...". He'd show images of beautiful arid desert architecture somewhere in the world, and then slip in an image of he and his wife eating the local food “picnic style”. I recall one image that included cheeze, fruit, bread, wine, him sitting indian-style (nakid with his back to the photographer), and a panoramic ocean view.
