Greer's rammed earth fireplace

In Greer, it is still quite chilly in March, as the Winter season edges into Spring.

We like the raw beauty of natural materials. The Ragel Family Greer Community Center has fireplace of rammed volcanic cindars. Rammed earth  is usually made of local gathered materials. In Arizona often crushed or decomposed granite. So in Greer, our rammed earth expert of the Southwestern United States, Quinten Branch, drove only 6 miles or so outside of town off the main highway and gathered cindars. "Ramming volcanic cindars is a personal first",  per the words of Quinten. Though beautiful in red,  cindars are also readily available in black. Black might be a color to try next time.

Note, this image is taken during construction. After the concrete slab was placed, the fireplace was constructed, prior to framing of walls and the roof.
